Interpretive Guides Association (IGA) Apprentice Interpreter


The Apprentice Interpreter Course is designed to provide an opportunity to learn about and practice effective communication techniques; Foundational knowledge about interpretation, interpretation techniques and skills that will help you communicate with your participants in a more meaningful, engaging, and fun way; An opportunity to learn about and practice those techniques; Inspiration to experience your place from your audience’s perspective, to develop a passion for your area and for sharing the stories of your area with visitors in a new way; And, a certification in interpretation (if you take and pass the test) that will establish you in this field or profession.

*Note: this certification is offered during the Foundations level program. However, this is an opportunity for Essentials level participants to obtain this certification outside of having to complete the Foundations level program.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Must be a Canadian citizen, have a Permanent Residency, Student Visa or Work Visa.
  3. Must be registered in, or have completed the Training Academy Essentials program (workshops and/or outdoor journey) prior to certification course start date.
  4. Preference will be given to Black, Indigenous, People of Color and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
  5. Must have current or future professional goals which require this certification to work as an outdoor instructor or guide within the next year.
  6. Successful applications will be notified by an email. Please note we require at least three weeks notice if you are unable to attend.

  • November 9, 2024 (In-person at Don Valley Brick Works, Toronto: 9am – 5pm ET)
  • Part 1: November 6, 2024 (Online: 6pm – 10pm ET)
  • Part 2: November 13, 2024 (Online: 6pm – 10pm ET)
